Important Health Warning About Playing Video Games

Photosensitive Seizures

A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certain visual images, including flashing lights or patterns that may appear in video games. Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause these “photosensitive epileptic seizures” while watching video games.

These seizures may have a variety of symptoms, including lightheadedness, altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs, disorientation, confusion, or momentary loss of awareness. Seizures may also cause loss of consciousness or convulsions that can lead to injury from falling down or striking nearby objects.

Immediately stop playing and consult a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Parents should watch for or ask their children about the above symptoms—children and teenagers are more likely than adults to experience these seizures. The risk of photosensitive epileptic seizures may be reduced by taking the following precautions: Sit farther from the screen; use a smaller screen; play in a well-lit room; and do not play when you are drowsy or fatigued. If you or any of your relatives have a history of seizures or epilepsy, consult a doctor before playing.

Precautions to take during use

  • Sit a good distance away from the monitor.
  • Avoid playing if you are tired or have not had much sleep.
  • Make sure that the room in which you are playing is well lit.
  • Rest for at least 10 to 15 minutes per hour while playing a video game.

Game Modes

DiRT 4 has six game modes - to choose between them select Events from the Main Menu.

Compete in single-player championships and online events to earn credits, which you can spend on improving your team and buying better cars for your garage.

Career

Compete in the main single-player championship. Four different disciplines are available - Rally, Landrush, Rallycross and Historic Rally. Only Rally is available initially. Further disciplines can be unlocked by completing the required number of Career Events.

Competitive

Test your skill in online community challenges.

Events

Multiplayer

Join online races against other players or create your own.

Freeplay

Create customised Rally, Landrush, Rallycross and Historic Rally championships and race in them without affecting your progress in Career mode.

DiRT Academy

Learn, practice and hone your rallying skills with practice laps and tutorials.

Joyride

Test your mettle in Time Attack and Smash Attack challenges on circuits littered with ramps, elevated driveways and other obstacles.

7

Disciplines

In the Career, Freeplay and DiRT Academy modes, you have a choice of four disciplines.

Rally

In Rally, competitors race one at a time down a section of road called a Stage. Stages vary in length and have different surfaces, ranging from gravel and dirt to asphalt and snow. An event is made up of one or more Stages with service intervals for your car to be repaired if necessary. The fastest combined time across all Stages wins the event.

To succeed, pay attention to your co-driver and push the car to the edge of its and your abilities.

Landrush

In Landrush, eight high-powered vehicles race around short dirt courses with hazards such as jumps, banked corners and moguls. Events consist of semi-finals and finals. The top four racers from the semi-finals compete in the A-final, and the bottom four the B-final.

Disciplines

Rallycross

Rallycross events are circuit races held in motorsport arenas, often in front of large crowds. Compete against 15 other drivers in qualifying heats, semi-finals and the final. Each driver must take a Joker lap (a shorter, albeit obstacle-strewn route around the circuit) at least once per race. Your Spotter will help you decide when to take it. Timing your Joker lap correctly can make the difference between winning and losing.

Historic Rally

The rules of Historic Rally are the same as standard Rally, but the cars are all classic and include some of the legendary Group B class from the 1980s.

8

Garage

In DiRT 4, you start as part of a team that provides you with a car, co-driver and engineers. In return the team takes a significant share of any credits you earn. To keep a bigger share, create your own team by buying your car, and hire staff such as a co-driver and engineers.

To view available cars or modify cars you already own, select Vehicles from the Main Menu.

To purchase cars, select Dealership or Classifieds from the Vehicles menu. Cars are purchased with credits, earned in the Career and Multiplayer game modes. Cars are grouped into categories: select a category to see what is available. To buy a car, highlight it and press the Return (↩) key.

Your purchased cars are stored in the Garage.

Managing Your Team

During a rally your car will suffer damage, which may affect its handling and performance. Damage sustained during one stage will carry over into later stages, so between stages your engineers will attempt to repair it. A skilled team with good facilities will keep your car in racing condition throughout a rally.

Your engineers can also upgrade your car with new parts, but you will need credits to buy parts, and the right facilities to fit them.

To view and manage your team and its facilities, select My Team from the Main Menu. Here you can hire Engineers, a Chief Engineer, PR Agent, Co-driver, Rallycross Spotter and Landrush Spotter. To learn more about a role, select it with the Return key, then select What’s This by pressing the F2 key.

You may also customise your team colours and your car's livery, as well as attract sponsors which earn you extra credits to spend on cars, parts, facilities and staff. To learn more about sponsors, select Branding & Sponsors, then select What’s This by pressing the F2 key.

9

Co-driver Notes

During rally events, your co-driver will call out a description of the corners and hazards ahead. Icons also appear on screen with the same information.

Typical calls include:

  • Corner descriptions, e.g. “Left six”. Your co-driver will call “left” or “right” depending on the direction of the next corner. The number indicates the severity of the corner, from 6 (least severe) to 1 (most severe). Your co-driver may also call “Hairpins”, which are even more severe than a “1”. If corners are close to each other, the notes are strung together using the terms “into” or “and”, e.g. “Left six into right one”.
  • Distances, e.g. “Eighty”. This is the distance in meters until the next corner or hazard.
  • Hazards, e.g. “Over crest” or “Narrows”. Most of these calls are self-explanatory. “Don’t Cut” means that a hidden hazard lies on the inside of the corner.

Recovery and Replays

Recover Vehicle

If you make a mistake, there’s no need to restart your race: you can use the “Recover Vehicle” ability to get back on track. To do so, press the F2 key when prompted, or press the Escape (esc) key to open the in-game Pause menu and select Recover Vehicle. For a small time penalty your car will be put back on the track.

Replays

Once a race has ended you may replay it. To do so, select View Replay while viewing the Results screen. Use the on-screen button prompts to rewind the video, play it back in slow motion or change the camera angle.
