Sid Meier’s Railroads! is a re-imagining of the legendary Railroad Tycoon. Designed by Sid Meier and developed and published by MicroProse, Railroad Tycoon was released in 1990 for the Amiga, Atari ST and MS DOS.
The ground-breaking strategy game challenged players to construct a rail empire across one of four locations, the Western United States, the Northeastern United States, Great Britain or continental Europe. Its simple, two-dimensional graphics were no hindrance to the addictive gameplay, and Railroad Tycoon was a great critical and commercial success.
A version of the game with new features and updated graphics and sound effects, Railroad Tycoon Deluxe, was released in 1993. It was later followed by the isometric Railroad Tycoon II (1998), and Railroad Tycoon 3 (2003), the first game in the series to be rendered in full 3D. After a visit to the model railway at Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany, Sid Meier was inspired to return to the “train set” gameplay that made Railroad Tycoon such a hit. Sid Meier’s Railroads!, released on PC in 2006, was the result.
